Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software

When surfing the internet, I often see the term Web 2.0 and I didn’t pay any attention to it. But I see this term too much that I have to study to know what Web 2.0 is. This is brief information about Web 2.0. I hope it’s helpful for who want to know what it is.

The phrase Web 2.0 refers to a perceived second-generation of web-based communities and hosted services — such as social-networking sites, wikis and folksonomies — which aim to facilitate collaboration and sharing between users. It became popular following the first O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004.

In the opening talk of the first Web 2.0 conference, Tim O'Reilly and John Battelle summarized what they saw as key principles of Web 2.0 applications:

the web as a platform

data as the driving force

network effects created by an architecture of participation

innovation in assembly of systems and sites composed by pulling together features from distributed, independent developers (a kind of "open source" development)

lightweight business models enabled by content and service syndication

the end of the software-adoption cycle (the so-called perpetual beta)

software above the level of a single device, leveraging the power of the "Long Tail"

ease of picking-up by early adopters

O'Reilly gave as examples: eBay, craigslist, Wikipedia, del.icio.us, Skype, dodgeball and Adsense.

An architecture of participation that encourages users to add value to the application as they use it. This stands in sharp contrast to hierarchical access-control in applications, in which systems categorize users into roles with varying degrees of functionality.

A rich, interactive, user-friendly interface based on Ajax or similar frameworks.

Learning PHP and MySQL easily with EasyPHP

I began learning PHP two weeks ago. I love PHP because it’s a good programming language I have to use in my university and it’s free. To run a PHP program you need a PHP interpreter, a web server, the one I use is Apache. And if you work with database you can use MySQL. All of them are free.

At the first week learning PHP, I found it difficult to configure the PHP interpreter, the Apache server and the MySQL too. It makes me crazy. Configuring three of them to make them work well together is a big problem, specially, with beginners. There are many tutorials on the internet instruct you how to configure them, but I found them difficult to understand.


Now everything is ok. I found a program that integrates three programs to one. That’s EasyPHP. EasyPHP is a free software you can download at EasyPHP.Org. It does everything for you. You don’t need to configure anything if you don’t want. Just install them and enjoy your PHP world. It also gives you the administration section where you can do many things to manage your databases visually without using console.

How to Increase Your Google Adsense CTR ?

At the begining of using Google Adsense, I want to earn some money with it. I think when people visit my blog, they will click on my Google ads and I will earn money. I used to believe that the more viewers visit my blog, the more money I can earn. I just pasted the ads code into my blog's template and waited for the huge amount of money come. Later I realized that without optimization, that's impossible. Here I will share all of the tricks to increase Google Adsense CTR that I found from my own and others' experiences.

1. When use the ads code, you must make sure the ads that are appearing on your site are closely related with your content.If your ads are not relevant, there's small possibility that people will click on them.

2. Blending your ads with your website themes such as background's color, links' color, text display color...People often don't click on your ads if they realize that they are going to click on an advertising link.

3. Use best performing ads such as 336x280, 300x250 or 250x250.These wide ads often work well on many different kinds of websites.

4. You should place your ads at the best positions on your site. Placing your Google Adsense ads at the following positions is the best choice:

the top position of your page that's visible without your visitor having to scroll down.

in the middle of an article. People tend to stop reading for a while and look for something different.

at the end of an article. After already read through your article, viewers often want to find more links with relative content.

5. Remember to use Link Unit ads. Try to place it near your navigation menu. Viewers sometimes don't realize that they are clicking on an ad.People will misidentify it as a navigation menu and automatically read it.

How to play Ogg format files?

If you often work with audio files,perhaps you 've met the Ogg audio format files. When I met them the first time,I was really confused about how to play them.I tried using many players I have but they solved nothing. And I intended to search for a Ogg player on the internet. WMA playback requires the Windows Media Format modules to be installed. Theycome installed with Windows Media player, so will already be on most users'systems, but they can also be installed separately (WMFDIST.EXE is availableat the XMPlay website). If these modules are not installed, XMPlay will stillwork fine, just without WMA support.

How to download Google Videos with original file format?

There are many friends asked me how to download videos from Google. At first I thought it's a difficult problem. I tried using Google Video and I found that I can download Google video with a download link provided by Google. The file I'll receive has the .gvp format. This file format can be played with Google Video Player.

But what will we do if we want to download the original video file with the .avi format or .wmv ..? The answer is using bookmarklet or JavaScript. If you want to save the original video file format without downloading Google's player, you can use a bookmarklet (JavaScript code). Make sure the link toolbar is visible in your browser. You can enable it if you go to View/Toolbars in your browser and check Bookmarks Toolbar in Firefox, Links in Internet Explorer or Personal Bar in Opera. Then drag and drop the bookmarklet:

And whether you want to make many blogs that will generate $2 - $3 each per day or to make only one blog that will generate $100 per day. Now, it's time to make decision. If you have one blog, keep it up. If you have more than one blog, you should find out if each is working well or not. Then continue with best blogs and terminate the bad ones.

Google runs TV ads

After months of speculation, Google has officially jumped into the television business.

The Web giant announced on Monday that it is partnering with EchoStar to sell commercials over the DISH satellite broadcaster's 125 national programming networks, an early indicator of how the Internet giant plans to use its $10.6 billion online ad business to conquer television.

Under the EchoStar deal, advertisers will use Google's AdWords automated auction interface to bid on ad spots. Advertisers can upload their TV commercials and select the desired time of day and channel, as well as choose regional or national area coverage. They can also target the ad based on a show's demographics, such as males 18 to 34 years old, said Keval Desai, director of product management for Google TV Ads.

We will wait to see their result in a new business field. And I think that this giant guy will succeed too, like his Google Adsense. Just because that's Google.

Be careful when using Google Adsense and other advertising networks on the same page

Some publishers increase their earnings by placing different ads of different advertising networks on their websites. How about using Google Adsense together with others? This doesn't mean that you can place any others' ads on your website when you think they doesn't compete with Google Adsense.AdBrite is one of the most popular advertising networks on the internet. AdBrite says that it accepts ads from Google Adsense on the same page with its. AdBrite's publishers think that: AdBrite doesn't mimic Google, except from the fact that it's a list of text links, kind of hard to disallow all text links for fear someone might think it's Google text. Well, this is a risk! We all don't know whether one nice day Google think that the ads you are using are competing with their ads. As a result, your account will be terminated.

An advice for this problem is: before deciding to do something that might violate Google Adsense 's TOS or Google AdSense Program Policies, you should email Google to ask for permission. That's a wise choice.

How to turn off the debug function in IE

Internet Explorer users often receive an dialog box with a message like this ("Error. A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you want to debug?"), which pops up whenever there's a bug in the JavaScript you run into on a website. It makes many people be tired of using IE. This is a function of IE which Microsoft gives us. If you're an IE's user, perhaps you've already know what I'm taking about and you might see that message at less once. When you accepted to debug by clicking Debug, you had no idea what to do with that information. Many users feel annoyed when they see that message box. Fortunately, because it is a function of IE, it's an option, we can turn off it easily.

In either IE6 or IE7, you click the Tools menu > Internet Options, then click the Advanced tab.
Make sure there are check marks next to "Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer)" and "Disable Script Debugging (Other)." as you can see in the image. Then the final step you have to do is to uncheck the box next to "Display a notification about every script error."

Each time IE crashes, Window places an error reporting on your computer. You can disable this task too. In Windows XP, you can go to the Control Panel > choose System, continue by clicking Advanced tab, then click "Error Reporting" at the bottom of the screen. Click the radio button next to "Disable error reporting." You can turn off "But notify me when critical errors occur" by unchecking it if you want.

Haven't Google and other search engines indexed your blog yet?

They said that they'd used the meta tags to submit their blogs to search engines, but their blogs are still not indexed.Are you in the same situation? Look at the HTML code, if you are using a classical template, you should delete the <$BlogMetaData$> in the <head> tag. Keep yourself safe from cookies

When you visit a webpage or do searching from a search engine, you're particularly vulnerable. Because the website will have a record of all of your activities or searches. It uses cookies to track you from session to session. To prevent this, you can frequently delete cookies from your computer. But cookies can be quite useful, for example by logging you in to some sites automatically, or saving your preferences on how you use sites. For example, when you log in your Blogger account, Blogger create cookies on your PC with information allowing you to access your account. After deleting your cookies, if you want to go to another section in your account, Blogger will ask you for user name and password again.

There is a simpler solution for this problem. That is to block only some websites from placing cookies on your PC. Here I only talk about how to do it in Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 . Other browsers are left for you.

In Internet Explorer 7, you choose Tools-->Internet Options, then click the Privacy tab, continue by clicking the Sites button. In the "Address of website" box, type in the website's URL you want to block( you need not to type the http:// in the address box, for example, www.donotplacecookies.com) and click Block (see image). From now on, when you visit that site, it won't be allowed to place a cookie on your hard disk, and it won't be able to track your activities or searches.

In Firefox 2, you start by selecting Tools-->Options, select the Privacy tab, and then click Exceptions. Then type the website's URL you want to block into the "Address of Web site" box and click Block.

For others browsers, you can use this same technique to keep cookies off your hard disk as well.

One of the best ways to increase your website's traffic is to submit your website to search engines such as Google.com ,Msn.com ,Yahoo.com ...By this way, people can find your website when they search for a specific keyword. To enable search engines index your site, you must place some meta tags in your site's source code. META Tags are HTML tags which provide information that describes the content of the webpages a user will be viewing. Search engines have recognized that website owners and administrators can use this resource to control their positioning and descriptions in search engine results. There are many relative meta tags you should include to your blog's template. In this article, I only talk about the most five popular meta tags: keywords, description, author, revisit-after, and robots.

Author META Tag
The author META tag defines the name of the author of the document being read. This tag is not widely supported but is recognized as part of the META Tag standard. The most common format is to insert the name of the person or organization and a contact email address.

Access restricted web sites using Google language tools service as a proxy.

A little tutorial found on the italian site www.manuali.net inspired me for this hack. That tutorial suggests to translate a webpage, using Google translator, to access it even if restricted.It worked fine but something else was needed... why translate?!

Ok, let's start from the beginning. We all know that Google is more than a search engine; we do use it as provider for email, mapping, news and many other services. Google is now also a free proxy service. Proxy is a device that stands between a PC and the internet, providing all the connections to the world wide web. What a proxy does is to receive all data from a requested site, so when you access web pages all data come from proxy.

What's the purpose for Google as a proxy? We often use office/school/university connections, usually those services are set to provide more safety, blocking the access to undesidered web sites (the "black list"). What you can do now is use Google translator service (language tools) as a proxy to bypass the restrictions set for our connection!

You just need to type the following URL:

http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=enen&u=www.forbiddensite.com
(www.forbiddensite.com stands for the URL you need to go to...)

What you'll get is the translation (english to english!) of the page you want to see... your connection is directed to a google.com page so this page won't be blocked (would be blocked only with google.com on the black list), no matter what's the content.

Notice that the URL has been a little hacked because the parameter "langpair" is set to "enen" (english/english) so the page is processed by Google but you can keep the original language of the page (no need to translate!). If you need another language (e.g. french) you just need to set the parameter langpair to "frfr" and you'll be able to read french pages in french!

A couple of examples:

english... http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=enen&u=hacks.oreilly.com

italian ... http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=itit&u=www.bigthistle.altervista.org

Last but not least: if you use this trick, you're not sure to protect your privacy, this kind of connection lets you see blacklisted pages but doesn't hide your IP address. Just go to http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=enen&u=www.whatismyip.com to see your IP is not hidden...

How to change the Email-This-Post icon?

In the previous post How to place an email post link to your blog?, I tell you how to enable the "email-this-post" feather of blogger. Today, I'll explain more about this feather because there're many bloggers emailing to me that they still can't enable the "email-this-post" feather. Some bloggers complain that the "email-this-post" icon isn't displayed on their blog after enabled. Others also asked me how to change the icon with text link.

This article assumes you are using a classic template (without the Layouts features). If you enabled the "email-this-post" successfully, you may see an inserted link in your blog template. Let's look at the code that is generated automatically for this link. It'll be something like this:

title="Email Post"> <span class="email-post-icon"> </span></a>

We will replace this code by our own code to change the link icon. If you still can't enable the "email-this-post", don't worry. The code below is for you, too. Now, you should go back to the Template tab in your blogger account and decide where you want to put the email links. At the end of each post is usually a good place. But you can place it wherever in between the <Blogger> tags. Once you've find a good place, copy and past this code right there:

Notice! You must replace the XXXXXXXX in the above code with your blog ID. And you can replace the EmailThis! with any text or image that you want. Now you have an "email-this-post" link as show in the image.

Alexa ranking is the most well-known ranking service. Many organizations choose Alexa ranking to evaluate a website's traffic. Alexa's traffic rank is calculated based on the last three months of data collected from Alexa Toolbar users and from links to your site. Your score is a combination of page views and "reach". The number of page views is determined by how many Alexa Toolbar users visit each page in your website (duplicate visits from the same user on the same day are counted only once). Reach is measured by the number of Alexa users per million who visit your site.
